The bay of Galle initially was a rocky peninsula and the Portuguese constructed a rampart and three bastions for defense. However the Portuguese could not enjoy the pride of their creation for long as it was conquered by the Dutch on 13th March 1640. In the book ‘The Temporal and Spiritual Conquest of Ceylon’, Portuguese writer Parinavo Kerosh provides a detailed description of this conquest by the Dutch. The book states that about 2000 Dutch soldiers landed at Unawatuna and proceeded on foot to the battle. Due to the lack of proper equipment of cannons, guns and bows, the Portuguese lost the battle.
